Ms. Mary Sebastian of the Secular Institute of the Maids of the Poor

Mary Sebastian passed away peacefully on 16th August, 2018, in Lucknow, India. She was 83. She made her first commitment in the Institute in 1956 and her final commitment took place in 1962.

She worked hard for the unity of all Secular Institutes in India. With her zeal she took up publishing the newsletter of the Indian Federation of Secular Institutes for a number of years. She was elected as the Executive Council Member of the World Conference of Secular Institutes, Rome, for a term of 4 years from 1992 to 1996.

The real revival of the whole Institute of the Maids of the Poor took place in her time. It was her constant effort, determination and hard work that gave a proper direction to the Institute to be known as the Secular Institute of the Maids of the Poor an Institute of Pontifical right. Her convictions, far sightedness, love and care for every member made her strong in all the hardships she faced. She helped the members to build confidence and move forward. With her strong faith in God and prayerful life, she remained firm and challenging. She took initiative to be reconciled with everyone and forgave everyone unconditionally. In the face of adversities she drew strength and courage from Mary our Mother who stood by the cross when her son was crucified. May she rest in peace.
